Along with the impressive driving experience, the interior screams MINI with its new dual cupholders and seemingly endless list of available options. The Paceman comfortably sits four in its bucket seats and has a sporty, intimate feel. The Paceman is built off the Countryman chassis and carries the ability to fold down the rear seats to provide an astonishing 38.1 cubic feet of cargo space. This is my second Mini. I had a 2003 Cooper S with manual trans for 34 months (should have kept it longer). So after 8 years without a Mini I returned to Mini. I wanted out of my current car (a 2013 Chevrolet Spark) so bad, I took what was available on the lot. I ended up with a base Paceman with automatic, moonroof, cold weather package, automatic climate control. I am very happy with the Mini qualities I liked in the S, but in a bigger package. Sits up higher, rides better. My overall mpg for 27k miles is 31mpg, although it is better then the EPA estimates, I expected better. The automatic is rated 30mpg hwy vs 35mpg hwy for the manual. I just did a 320 mile roundtrip (exterior temp 20, interior heat set at 74, and running snow tires), and got my worst mpg ever (26.68). I kept up with traffic, so sometimes hitting 85mph, but most of the time averaging 74mph in windy conditions(dry roads). Car tracked fine in the wind, no issues, just lower mpg. I miss shifting gears myself. If I were to do it over, I would still buy a Paceman, but it would be an S version with a manual transmission, and no other options. I've opened up that moonroof 3 times in the 15 months I owned it. The phone connectivity isn't that great, it's easy to use, but it seems like all the others out there, it's ok, but not great. I'm really surprised the Paceman is not selling better. I have had more compliments with this Mini then my first one. This car is bigger, sits up higher, so it's easier to get in and out of, and it has all the great Mini qualities that make it a Mini.

Don't sneeze while driving this car, the steering effort is minimal but with lots of bump steering evident on California roads. Our basic model interior is quiet on the road and comfortable but the 1.6L un-turboed engine is whinny and needs constant (manual) shifting to keep the revs up and pace in highway stop-n-go traffic. One total company miscue is equipping the Paceman with a steering wheel with buttons to activate the hands-free speech controls for your phone, all of which DOES NOT work unless you purchase the Navigation package. You can however reach over and punch the buttons on the radio to make phone calls while talking on the built-in microphone or hold your smartphone in your hand-LOL!
