Compare the Volvo XC90 Against the BMW X5

Comparing the Volvo XC90 and BMW X5 - Which Luxury SUV is Right for Reno, NV Drivers?

As two of the most revered luxury SUVs on the market, both the Volvo XC90 and BMW X5 are phenomenal options to choose from. While you'll find both luxury and style in spades with both of these luxury SUVs, the Volvo XC90 does well to stand out above the BMW model to make a better option for Reno, NV drivers.

Performance

When it comes to what you get under the hood, both the Volvo XC90 and BMW X5 strike a similar territory. While the Volvo XC90 utilizes a twincharged four-cylinder engine generating 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, the BMW X5 needs a larger six-cylinder turbo to generate 335 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque. The lower weight of the four-cylinder means that the added horsepower of the BMW gets lost trying to get up to speed, resulting in similar acceleration in both models.

Efficiency

Of course, power isn't everything and how much you spend to keep fuel in your new SUV will also be a major consideration when choosing which model to bring home. With the Volvo XC90, you'll have up to 30 mpg highway and 21 mpg in the city, as compared to just 25 mpg highway in the BMW X5. That means you can stretch your fuel budget further in the Volvo model, and that's before considering the plug-in hybrid model that lets you drive for up to 21 miles on electric power alone.

Technology

The 2022 Volvo XC90 and BMW X5 both feature voice-activated technologies and commands that allow you to control a wide vareity of functions behind the wheel. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and Volvo OnCall system both act at the sound of a command prompt, so you never have to take your eyes off the road or hands off the wheel. And with each system, you can control navigation, climate control settings, ask about upcoming weather conditions, and even contact nearby hotels and restaurants to make reservations while you're still on the road.

Safety

When it comes to safety, you'll be hard-pressed to find a vehicle that offers more standard kit than the Volvo XC90. This luxury SUV provides Carson City and Sparks, NV drivers with standard driver assistance tech including a forward collision warning system that detects pedestrians, vehicles, cyclists, and even large animals on the road ahead. You'll also get a standard automatic emergency braking system to help avoid collisions when you don't react quickly enough, and adaptive cruise control makes for safer highway drives. All of these features come as standard in the Volvo model, while simple forward collision warning is an add-on with the BMW X5 model. You'll have to shell out even more if you want adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, or front and rear parking sensors, all of which are also standard kit on the Volvo XC90 SUV.

Luxury

Once again, the standard features are where the 2022 Volvo XC90 stands on its own, as you'll get dual-zone automatic climate control along with a power-sliding panoramic moonroof in every new Volvo XC90 model. You won't find those same features in the BMW X5 unless you add them as options, and the same is true for the heated and ventilated seats that come in the new Volvo XC90 model. Premium leather is available but not standard for either vehicle, while ambient interior lighting is a standard feature in both.

Price

The new Volvo XC90 base trim costs nearly $10,000 less than the BMW X5's entry-level model.

The new Volvo XC90's top-tier trim costs around $30,000 less than the BMW X5's range-topping trim.
